No, I don’t have a deep essay in store on how these four topics are profoundly related. I simply had several things I wanted to post today.

God

I was raised in a Christian home and today remain comitted to my faith. However, I also try to take a reasoned and level-headed approach to most things, and for that reason decided it was time to really address some of the questions I had about my faith. Not questions about what Christianity taught, or even what made Christianity right while other religions were wrong. Rather, I wanted to explore whether belief in the supernatural was itself reasonable. I had been taught it was, and knew some arguments for why it was, but felt I needed to explore more. After all, if I hold to Christianity on blind, untested faith, then my beliefs could be as misguided (or more so) than anyone else’s.

So last summer I spent a lot of time researching issues like existence, evolution, historical and geological corroboration of the Bible, the process of canonization, and a lot in between. What I found did not dismantle my belief in the Christian God. In fact, it strengthened it tremendously. But I did have to reevaluate and change some of my other beliefs in light of what I found.

As I did this research, I prepared a series of studies or presentations summarizing what I found. I led a class at my church last fall, and afterward began working on making a video series out of them for publication on the web. I think these are issues that Christians do, and should, wrestle with, so I wanted to share my findings with others in hope that my viewers would learn something and perhaps work against the stereotype (warranted, in many cases) that Christians tend to be ignorant and scientifically naive. Not that I have all the answers, but hopefully what I present will be helpful in encouraging Christians and non-Christians alike to address these questions fairly and honestly. That’s certainly what I tried to do.

I’ve written and filmed all of the episodes, but have only recently begun editing them. I just finished episode 1 and have posted it to blip.tv. I’m not sure if I’ll go back and do any touching up later, but the substance is there. More likely I’ll just start on the next episode once academic demands lessen. I hope you find it worthwhile.

Carls Jr.

And now for something completely different… I thought this was funny:

Carls Jr. vs. Morgan Spurlock

That hamburger looks disgusting, even without Super Size Me reminding me of how unhealthy it is.

Blogs

A friend of mine recently gave me a shout-out on her blog, so I thought I’d return the favor and list her and another friend’s blogs:

Malori -A friend from my neighborhood growing up. She’s a strong Catholic and very involved in pro-life efforts, and is a very gifted violinist.

Stef - A friend from my church who has since received her M.S. and gone to work in Washington DC. She’s been blogging a long time and consistently seems to find something interesting to share.

I actually can’t think of any other friends who blog consistently, otherwise I’d list them too. Sorry if I missed anyone!

Music

Finally, I’ve been listening to some new (to me) music which I thought I’d recommend:

  • Thrice – Awesome rock band that manages to keep their sound fresh and varied. Definitely check out their latest release “The Alchemy Index Vols 1&2: Fire and Water.” It’s part of a 4-volume project inspired by the four elements fire, water, earth and sky. The contrast between the heavier, pounding fire-themed songs and the much mellower, melodic water-themed tracks is awesome. Vheissu is a great album as well. Their older stuff isn’t bad and certainly includes some good songs, but they used to scream a bit too much for my tastes.
  • Coheed & Cambria – Another great rock band with some very progressive stylings and an unusual but really cool vocal sound. Their song “Welcome Home” is amazing.
  • Symphony X – A friend had recommended this band to me a while back, but I’ve recently been listening to more of their stuff and really like it. They’re a symphonic metal band of a similar ilk as Dream Theater and to some extent Nightwish (sans the female vocals).

Enjoy!
